Exercises to Improve Your Singing

A singer needs to be reasonably fit since a lot of energy is used when you are on stage presenting your piece. If you have no stamina you’ll get very tired and your breathing and larynx control will suffer. Physical exercises will not only make you fitter and healthier, but also increase your lung capacity - necessary in a singer.

Swimming is one of the best exercises to increase fitness and lung performance. If you are not very fit, start off slowly and gradually increase the length of your sessions. If you have nowhere to swim or the weather is freezing, then other forms of aerobic exercise are also good. Jogging, walking, running, playing tennis and even cycling all develop lung and heart strength. If you incorporate any dance movements with your singing, you will certainly need to be fit and healthy.

Another type of exercise that proves beneficial is co-ordination training such as yoga and Tai Chi. These are particularly good because they increase your awareness of your muscle groups and help in relaxation. Tension will strain your voice and maybe hurt your larynx beyond repair.

Doing certain exercises that cause tension in the shoulders and neck are not advisable. These can be such things as weight lifting, crunches and sit-ups. If you do these types of exercises, be sure to have a time of relaxation before you start singing.

If there is some reason you can’t do aerobic exercises, try Callenetics. This exercise regime is done without any jumping around, but concentrates smaller movements on various muscle areas. Pilates is a very gentle form of exercise, as is the Alexander Technique. Check with your doctor before starting any exercise regime.

Some exercises to help warm you up and relax your body are: -
Take a deep breath and let it out in a yawn, saying aaaah on exhalation.
Stand in a relaxed pose and move your shoulders in circles.
Bend over from the hips and let your arms hang to the floor, straighten and lift your arms up above your head, then lower them to your sides. Repeat five times.
Standing in a relaxed pose, drop your head slightly and gently draw a circle in the air with your nose.
Do the same as above but draw a square. This is gentle exercise for your neck muscles.
Remember that gentle is the keyword.
